A/C recharge fitting mismatch

I want to recharge the a/c in my 1994 Mercury Topaz. Problem is: according to the tag near the refill fitting it has R134a in the system, but it has an older R12 fitting. Are there adapters that will allow the R134 nozzle to work?

Yes. Every auto parts store I’ve been in sells the port adapters. Just ask. After converting my old Toyota to R-134a from R-12, the kit came with an adapter that didn’t even require I change the schreader valve. Later, I found a 90 deg adapter that made checking the pressures easier. But it did require the valve be removed.

Are there adapters that will allow the R134 nozzle to work?

Yes. The shop that converted the system should have left the adapter fittings in place. Now, you get into a problem with double schreader valves. The inner one has to be removed, resulting in refrigerant loss…Perhaps newer adapter fittings can open the inner valve without having to remove it for charging…
