The VW Beetle was at that time the only small import that could cruise all day at Freeway speed without burning out its engine. The BMC demo in Germany was an attempt to prove that the Morris Minor and other cars from BMC could do this as well. It took me only one summer to burn out the valves on a 60 mph speed limit Freeway. The 265 mile demo on the Autobahn strained credibility.
In 1960 I rented a Beetle in Europe and spent all summer driving 10,000 km at legal speed limits and over. That included pedal to the floor on the German Autobahn from the Dutch border to To the Swiss border. Over the summer we added only 1 liter of oil! and did 3 oil changes.
