98 Grand Am

Our '98 Grand Am is in great shape and runs super but it is using a lot of oil. Has about 120,000 miles on it, 4 cylinder. Is this common for this car? Any suggestions?

Define a lot of oil, 1 qt./500 miles, 1000 miles, etc? When was the last time the PCV valve was replaced? A sticking PCV will increase oil usage.

After 8 years of ownership, my 93 Caprice (77k miles) consumed a noticeable amount of oil between changes (1/2 quart). After it failed NJ Emissions testing, I found the PCV was sticking because the car is driven so little. The PCV was replaced, the Caprice passed emissions, and I suspect the oil consumption will drop also.

About one quart per 1,000 miles. Thanks for the PCV hint.
