My car is a 93 Hyundai Excel with the automatic transmission. The donor car was a 94 Excel with a manual transmission. This instrument cluster had the rare tach so that is why it was to go in mine. Everything I have read on the Hyundai forums said it is 100% plug and play regardless of year or transmission. The upgraded instrument cluster worked in the donor car, but in mine nothing works. Fuel gauge goes to full but that’s about it (my tank is almost empty). Does anyone know what would cause this? I’ve checked the printed circuitboard, fuses, everything.
Is it possible the plug to the cluster is upside down?
Without schematics to pore over I’m afraid that I’m no help. Maybe somebody was mistaken or lied about the interchange.
One pin out of place, one different wire in the harness, etc can mean the difference between yea and nay.
I find it difficult to buy into the theory that they’re all interchangeable regardless of year. Car makers are always tweaking wire harnesses or printed circuits and sometimes they even do this in the middle of a production year.
If your old cluster powers up when plugged back in then obviously it’s not as interchangeable as you’ve been told.
The fuel gauge going to FULL would mean that the gauge lead going to the tank sending unit is meeting a direct ground through the cluster connector and/or wiring.
The question I would ask is, if the original instrument cluster didn’t have a tach input signal because it’s an automatic transmission, where is the tach signal coming from with a manual instrument cluster in a vehicle with an automatic transmission?
Plug and Play?
This isn’t a video game.
Put the original instrument cluster back in and live without the tach.

Is the only reason for this swap to obtain the tach function? Or is there a problem with the original cluster?
As mentioned above, my guess is that a 94 cluster won’t work with a 93 model car. I wouldn’t expect that combo to work in any car, unless I had proof b/c somebody I trusted had already done it.
