2025 Equinox No Integrated Garage Door Opener

We picked up a new 2025 Equinox a few days ago and we were shocked to find out it does not have an integrated garage door opener. This is the first car in 20 years that does not have the feature.

We never even thought to ask about something so trivial until we were about to leave the dealership. The car has so many electronic features I couldn’t list them here. The manual has a section on the opener where it says “if so equipped”.

Of course we’ll use the opener visor clicker, but what the hey! Is this a new trend? Is it just a Chevy/GM thing?

No it is not. It all depends on the trim level for any brand. Look at your window sticker.
Did you ask the dealer about this ?

Yes. He answered something along the line of "that is just what they do now. "

What trim level do you have?

Look at this article:

One, it sounds like some models that were supposed to have the garage door opener didn’t have one.

Two, it says the factory-installed garage door opener comes standard on all Activ and RS variants.

When I look at the www.chevrolet.com/shopping/configurator/suvs/2025/equinox site under "build your own, I see the 2025 Equinox LT model does not come equipped with the Universal Home Remote (garage door opener).

My 2023 Tacoma SR5 does not have one, have to get the TRD or higher to get one…

I dunno but I’ve had a new opener I bought two years ago that I haven’t installed yet. I just wanted it to act like the old one but they want a Wi-Fi hub, and use your phone etc. I’ve got like four different switches to activate my two doors and intend to keep using them but not easy with the new opener. I think I have a work around figured out but not the energy yet to try it. Plus the Acura instructions for reprogramming the button is on the cd somewhere not in the book.

Bottom line might b3 they want people to use their phones (maybe so they can later charge for the app or make it obsolete). Got the same answer when I asked why I don’t get weather radar on my radio. Everyone uses their phone now. Yeah except some of us that still pay cash for coffee.

Teslas have one as an option for $350. My solution is using the remote that came with the garage door lift.

Not a major problem but some of the older garage door openers might not program to a newer vehicle. Our 2010 Volvo would not pair to the new opener in 2023.

+1
My 26 year old Genie would not pair with system in a 2022 Lexus. I don’t really see this as a significant problem, because it’s easy enough to store the remote in one of the storage cubbies in the vehicle.

When life serves up lemons, make lemonade. The upside is that if the garage door won’t go up and new batteries doesn’t fix it, you can just replace its remote, relatively inexpensive solution. No waiting for a shop diagnosis and no car repair fees.

I drive a Chevy Volt. The 1st generation Volt was 2011 to 2015 and had an integrated door opener. For the 2nd gen (2016 to 2019) GM decided in their infinite wisdom that the garage door opener was no longer needed! And of course I have a 2017!

Speaking of garage doors, anyone else replace their springs pre-emptively? Mine are out for delivery today. I never used to but have had them break at most inopertune times in the past. Only good for so many cycles and kaboom.

No, but I’ve done some pre-emptive purchasing of garage door springs.

Mine just came but actually last time I bought a spare set. Why? If you have a spring break you have a heck of a time getting the car out to go get another one. One door with two springs and two doors with one spring. So no matter which breaks I have a left and a right on hand.

I don’t know what a repair outfit would charge but two springs for under a hundred dollars and an hour or two of exercise. Yeah I replace the cables at the same time.

The hardware store I used to buy my door springs went out of business, and so I’m left with just a big box store that doesn’t stock the springs I require. Not sure how I will handle that next time a spring breaks. Replacing a spring definitely is a challenge for a diy’er like me. Haven’t done it in some time, but IIRC I use one of these

If you prop the garage door open, then a come-along isn’t needed to replace the springs.

I buy mine from Home Depot but you have to order them after searching their site for garage door springs. I’ve also ordered parts and accesories on line. That’s the reason though I carry an extra set. The local farm store and others have some but not exact matches. Close is not good enough for springs.

If you prop the door open, you can’t get at the torsion springs. I’ll add to my list. Never marry someone who can’t change a tire or a spring.

Those torsion springs are best left to the pros.

My springs are the side “extension” springs. Safer for the homeowner installer (me). I just installed new ones. The old ones were the wrong color, the color matches up with the door weight. I’ve got my door working pretty smoothly now.

Yes. That’s true.
I was assuming, maybe mistakenly, that George did not have torsion springs, given he said he needed to use a come-along.
