2017 Toyota Camry - Unintended acceleration

Sitting in line at a bank, with my foot on the brakes my car sped off and did not stop until it ran into the back of the vehicle in front of me.

So no question?

If your foot was on the brake, you could have stopped the car. The brakes are stronger than the engine.

The few time’s I use the drive through’s I see people (in my opinion) pull to close to the car in front of them then they start playing with their phone and not paying attention to what is going I can see where they can ease of the brake and when they realize it mash down hard with the foot and hit the gas at the same time.

Camry - check (mine is 2004);
ATM line - check;
Foot on brake - check;
Unintended acceleration - check;
Hit something - nope (whew!).

I was wearing big galoshes, and from experience I realized that the edge of my foot was also pushing the accelerator; I managed to recover quickly.

What experience? Several months before, while wearing big work boots, I got distracted talking to my passenger as I nosed into a parking space. My foot forgot that I had not moved it over to the brake pedal, so when I went to “brake”, I accelerated. And the harder I “braked”, the faster I went. Here’s a pic.

Yup!
In the aftermath of my friend’s Accord being T-boned by a crazy woman driving a Lexus RX, I overheard the police officer’s questioning of the woman.

She told the cop, “The harder I pressed the brake, the faster it went”. As he walked away, the officer muttered, “Yeah, that’s what happens when you don’t know the difference between the gas and the brake”.
