Took the van on a 1500 mile round trip. Took all my tools, spark plugs, etc just in case. lol No issues. She ran great, had good pickup and avg over 22 mpg. Thanks again to everyone for your comments and help. I really appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing the good news. So what was the crux: one bad spark plug, replaced?

Nope, it wouldn’t do that. The only difference between regular and premium is the octane level. Higher octane will do nothing for you.

Pretty much shanonia, got hung up on a tree, accelerated a small amount to get off of it and that caused a bad spark plug. I thought it was everything but that. One other thing, when I disconnected the battery I had locked my doors. Next morning I came out and couldn’t use the key fob to get in. Then I remembered the manual key is inside the key fob. Took it out and opened the van without a problem. Really convenient to have the manual key inside the fob like that, especially if your battery dies.

That action would not cause that reaction. The mystery continues…

Maybe the acceleration with the old gas did it? I’m surprised more spark plugs didn’t foul but happy it was only one and it was an easy to get to. I’ve got to look into a product that will keep gas stable for long periods of time in the gas tank. I just don’t drive the van enough.

Spark plugs can fail for other reasons than fouling. If the ceramic portion has even a tiny crack, it will cause the high voltage spark to short out. In any event, glad you got the problem solved. Couldn’t ask for a better sol’n than only needing to replace a single spark plug. Best of luck

I had a misfire code on my 2002 Miata that made me nuts, even worse than usual. I cleaned the injectors, replaced the spark plugs, swapped the coils, changed the fuel filter, cleaned and reset every ground connection I could find. The engine only has 53,000 miles on it. Until one damp morning I started it and the drive belt started squealing like crazy, so I checked and the belt was pretty damn loose. Tightened it up properly and reset the check engine light (again!) and now it seems fine. Go figure.
