Engage 1st gear & let clutch out nothing happens, it’s as if it’s in neutral.
Most likely either the clutch is worn out and slipping, or there’s a linkage problem between the clutch pedal and the lever that actuates the clutch mechanism inside the bell housing. Start by inspecting the clutch pedal area. See anything unusual there? Usually when the clutch first starts to slip, it’s noticed first in the higher gears. So I’m guessing the problem is more likely a linkage problem.
This could be a problem with the clutch master or slave cylinder (assuming your car uses a hydraulic clutch), but the symptom for that problem is usually that it is difficult to change gears when engine is running. If you are able to change the gears when engine is running no-problem, the MC/SC theory is less likely.
My crystal ball says… you are asking a question and not just letting us know.
When you have trouble getting the transmission into gear, inspect the shift linkage for adjustment, looseness or damage. check to see if the clutch cable is not broken.
However, remember that failure to get into gear can also be caused by the clutch if the clutch isn’t fully releasing or has other problems. The clutch might need adjustment.
What about 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and reverse gears???
