I’d have the car towed (do not drive or start the engine) to a mechanic, and have them drain, flush, and clean out the fuel tank. Personally, I’d have them change the fuel filter too, if applicable.

Then I’d add a locking fuel cap, if available, so this doesn’t happen again.

Best of luck.

Did you start it yet?

Drain the tank in to jerry cans and give them some of the free gas.

For whatever it’s worth, many years ago, the Magliozzi brothers stated that they had never seen engine damage from that type of vandalism.

How do you know that? It’s actually not easy to do, what with the vapor systems on cars these days. And it doesn’t sound like it is actually very harmful.

How much sugar? 50 pounds of sugar would block the fuel pump inlet filter. It would be difficult to get more than 1 lb. of sugar past the roll-over valve located in the fuel filler tube.

3 years ago, I added a few tablespoons of sugar to 8 ounces of gasoline, this is how it looks today; the sugar has not dissolved.

What kind of container is that?

Plastic beverage container.

The gasoline didn’t dissolve it? Went through a Dixie cup in about 2 minutes.

Dixie sells paper products, you didn’t specify what your cup was made from.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles are not recommended for gasoline storage, but it is more durable than Styrofoam or paper.

The plastic cups that are red on the outside that people use at parties for soda. Maybe it wasn’t Dixie I can’t remember.

I put 1/2 a teaspoon of sugar in about half a cup of gasoline. It still isn’t dissolved. Maybe the sugar needs to be mixed with water first.

Why they do that?

Vandalism is covered by insurance.

I wonder if the OP has full coverage insurance on an 18 year old vehicle?

Note in capital letters “EX”. Some EXs can’t let go.
