You could check the wiring where it passes from the body into the tailgate to see if it’s been damaged by flexing repeatedly over the years. That happened to me on my last SUV.
While you’re at it, check the operation of any lights that are in the liftgate. License plate light, maybe high mount brake light, maybe interior lights, etc. Like @lion9car said, the wires flex a lot and they can break, inside the insulation so they look OK.
