2006 Hyundai Sonata - worth a new engine?

My husband bought a 2006 Hyundai Sonata for his son on Sept. 20. It cost $3450 and had 119,600 miles. The car started knocking on October 13 - they checked the oil and it was full. The next day the car started knocking again, then smoke poured out of the car — it had blown a rod. It had been driven less than 1400 miles.

The seller did not offer a warranty but Car Fax indicates the car had 2 previous owners and serviced it regularly.

An engine (used) for this car is $1400 + labor + additional parts like timing chain, etc. is it worth putting the money into the car.

Only you can answer that question. That used engine and timing chain are going to cost another $1800 for a total of $3200 or so for a car you just paid $3450 for. Junk it.

You didn’t have a mechanic look this over before you bought it, did you? We always recommend an inspection before you buy.
