2000 Hyundai Sonata

Has 97,000 miles, body and interior about a “6” out of “10”, and engine about a “9”. 4-door, 4cyl. Asking price of $3400 or best offer. Is this a good first car for my almost 18-year-old son? Could I offer $3000 on the spot?

Based on your description, I wouldn’t offer more than $1,000.

Hyundai vehicles have come a long way in the last few years (my daughter drives an '06 Accent). but earlier vehicles are a gamble.

I have no problem with the most recent Hyundai vehicles (three years old or newer), but I wouldn’t spend much for anything older than that.

The vehicle you are considering needs a timing belt RIGHT NOW, and that’s a $500 repair, if not more.

Walk away from this car. There will be other, more attractive cars, coming your way. Skip this one.
