2006 Ford F150 slipping tranny in overdrive

I have a 2006 F-150, 2 WD, that was given to me by my father who babied it. When driving, I keep it in the Overdrive gear (automatic transmission), as opposed to “Drive”. From day one, I have noticed that when I need to “punch it” or “hit the gas” (to get on the freeway or pass someone), the tranny slips. As a result, I now downshift to “Drive” ahead of time, to get decent acceleration. Why is the tranny slipping in Overdrive? I’ve heard a few other F-150 owners complain about the same issue. I have the 4.3 (4.6?) liter engine and don’t tow anything, BTW.

When was the last time the transmission fluid was serviced?
