Daughter has that vehicle. Says power steering is awful when she first starts the car, difficult to turn the steering wheel. Gets better as the car warms up. O-ring? Air in the power steering fluid? Thanks,
Mike
Worn out power steering pump most likely.

Has anyone actually checked the power steering fluid level ?

What you’re describing is called “morning sickness”.
This occurs when the spool valve seals in the rack & pinion unit allow power steering fluid to leak past them. This then causes no power steering assist. Then as the unit heats up the seals direct the power steering fluid properly so power steering assist returns.
