I have had two identical breakdowns in the last week. Driving on the highway and the truck sputters, check engine light comes on and the engine shuts down. On inspection the battery is dead. The first time we recharged the battery and tested and replaced the alternator which was week. It broke down the same way 40 miles later, battery dead again. I was always under the impression that the truck could run on a dead battery. No? COuld a dead battery cause the engine to shut down?
Thanks in advance.

It used to be that way before the advent of computers. When the battery voltage drops below 10.5 volts computers can begin to shut down.
