2003 Honda Odyssey: A warning code yesterday, but gone today...?

If he made the check engine light go off, then he cleared the codes.
the second mechanic would not be able to read them until you drive long enough for the codes to come back.

No offense, but does this 2003 Honda Odyssey merit an overhauled automatic transaxle . . . ?!

Many 21yr-old vehicles are no longer in great shape

If this van is rusty and the suspension, steering, etc. isnā€™t in good shape, the cost to repair may handily exceed the value of the van

That said, if your van IS in good shape, it might be wiser to fix your vehicle, versus buying another used vehicle from some stranger who may have maintained it very poorly

The devil you know . . .

The typical 1st order business when reading codes is to note them, clear than, and then see if they come back. So the first shop probably did clear them.

2003 Odyssey with 146K on the clock? Itā€™ll be back (esp. with the symptoms you described). Wait for that, and then - if you want to keep it - be prepared to drop a good amount of $$ on a remanned transmission with a decent warranty on it.
