2004 toyota tundra. runs but when I shift into gear, it dies. What is wrong?
Is your CEL on? If so, what are the code numbers?
+1
Did it start by stalling when coming to a stop??
What is the engine rpms at idle before putting into gear and stalling??
Does it immediately stall when putting into gear, or can you give it some gas to keep it running??
The problem might be with Idle Air Control valve.
The next time you start the truck, before you shift into gear, firmly step on the brake pedal and slightly step on the gas to add another 200 RPM’s, and then shift into gear.
If doing this prevents the engine from stalling, it points to a problem with the IAC valve.
Tester
My pinhead diy’er guess is some combo of the engine running too lean & idle rpm too low.
IIRC, the idle speed of this engine–like most modern engines–is not adjustable, but perhaps cleaning the throttle body would help.
What is a CEL?
Check Engine Light
no. check engine light is not on and was not on prior to the engine stopping when shifting into gear.
Did you look at the Idle Air Control valve that Tester mentioned in an earlier post.
What were the results with the simple test he suggested?
If your IAC is bad, I’ve had luck taking them apart and cleaning them, though you may want to just replace it.
Has the car’s truck’s idle mixture been assessed yet?
How would that be adjusted on a MPFI system without a tuner doing a tune on it??
Besides, if the OP was looking for help he/she would have answered more than one question… We can’t help them if they don’t help us…
