Good advice above to post the shop- retrieved diagnostic codes here for best help here. I’ll treat this as a puzzler. hmm… 22 year old MB? ok, I’m guessing there’s a problem with the evaporative emissions system.
The check engine light is telling you to have the engine checked!
It needs to have a code scanner plugged in and the error codes listed to determine the diagnostic starting point. We can’t do that from here. Go to your local mechanic… or a dealer. Expect to pay to just have it diagnosed.
