2001 Lexus RX 300 shifter moves freely

Shifter moves freely as though it is not connected . Does not engage any gear ,. ie , drive, reverse ,etc.

Are you feeling any resistance, any bumps, anything . . . when you move the shift lever?

On the side of the transmission, see if the shift cable has come off the shift lever, or the shift lever has come off the shift lever shaft.
