2001 GMC Yukon

Please apply your bogosity meter to this problem and tell me if I have been misled.

I drive a 2001 GMC Yukon SUV and sometimes when I start it up it ticks really loud. Once the motor is warmed up the tick quits.

i took it to the dealer recently and they told be that the vehicle has what they call pistion carbon build up. It is a condition that occurs in the 2000, 2001 and 2002 GMC Yukon.

Have you ever heard of this?

They also said that there is a remedy but I forgot what it was.

I will await your reply.

Terry

Carbon build up. That’s a new one to me.

It’s a better known term called ‘piston slap’, which occurs until the pistons warm up and expand to slide in the lubed cylinders instead of bouncing around.

It doesn’t do any harm. Just noisy.

BTW, you are right, there is something ($) you can do. I just can’t think of it right now. (Must be a seniors moment)

Another ‘ticking’ noise you may hear is a semi-dry valve lifter, which quietens down once lubed.

I have a 2002 Tahoe 5.3L with the same noise with 130k miles and no engine rebuild.

Thank you for verifying my post, TT.
