2000 Saab 9-3 - missing & shifting

Halp!

For a couple of YEARS now, when we turn the Saabie on, it won’t necessarily complete a shift into gear - it might stop at Reverse, and not go into drive, or it might not go anywhere at all. The problem won’t fix without turning it off and back on again. Some times it seems worse than others, and we’ve had several mechanics (saab certified and not) take a look, and no one can seem to figure it out.

The lights have been on since a few days after we bought it. That too (and it’s been through a 90K inspection since at a Saab Certified DEALER in Geneva NY) has not been diagnosed or fixed.

Most recently, the car’s driving performance has taken a turn for the worse. It almost seems like it’s missing - kind of surges while you’re driving down the road. This has specifically come up in the past couple of days, and the trouble of finding a shop around town leaves me feeling sort of stumped. Any thoughts?
