So, I was driving to work today and just as I pulled into the parking lot, I felt/heard something pop slightly and I could no longer shift. My gear shift felt loose and it would only move to where 1 and 2 used to be (this is a manual transmission, obviously). My clutch feels the same as normal.
I haven’t driven any cars in a while, so now I’m wondering if I did something wrong to cause this problem, or if I just have bad luck. (And, of course, I’m wondering what the problem is… and how expensive it is going to be to repair).

It sounds like your shift linkage has simply become disconnected.
Or, the linkage itself may have snapped, but that is not as likely as a connector coming loose.
On a 12 year old car, I doubt that this has anything to do with you, and it is just one of those things that can happen as a car ages.
I agree. Sounds like something came apart in the shift linkage. I doubt you had anything to do with it.
