1995 Cougar PCM replacement

I have a 1995 Mercury Cougar that the dealer tells me needs a new PCM. Is this a module that can simply be swapped out, or does this need professional installation? I see the part sells for around $250-$300 but the dealership wants $900 for the part and labor.

This is a plug and play repair. The PCM is located behind the right kick panel. But what I would do is get a replacement from a local auto recycler. Much cheaper. The only thing they’ll need is the bar code from the original PCM so they can match you up with the correct one. But remember to disconnect the battery before doing any of this.
