94 ford ranger. keeps dyeing. changed many censors, now transmission trouble. could the tranny be the problem from the star?

The problem- -26 year old truck not properly diagnosed before throwing parts at it.
A problematic transmission could potentially cause stalling. Still it seems an unlikely cause. Is this a manual or automatic transmission?
