1990 Nissan Sentra clunks when I release clutch

I have a 1990 nissan pulsar gti and I can can put it in gear but as soon as the clutch is released it will move but with a really bad clunking noise.
Any ideas please.

In neutral, or only when driving?

Check for a worn out motor mount which will allow the engine to swing several inches and clunk when pulling away.

It’s fine in neutral only when you try to drive.

Clunk-clunk-clunk from the front while in drive often means a bad CV joint in one of the front axles. Sometimes worse when driving while turning. So it may not be the clutch. First thing: are the lug nuts tight?
