im look at buying a 1990 L-town car.its in good shape but the overdrive is out on the tranny the guy who’s selling it says it just makes the gas mileage suck on the car but thats all.so what i would like to know does that mean the tranny is going out or is it not a big deal like he said?can it be fix?and should i buy it its only 825$obo with 204,600 mi on it.it would be just a get to work car
What kind of commute do you have? If it’s only in a city, then who cares? If it’s mainly on the highway, then I’d say avoid the car. At any rate, you’re going to have to put a decent amount of work into it, seeing as it is a 17 year old vehicle. Panther platform cars are very reliable, but that being said, it’s an old car with lots of miles. I’d be a little leery unless you have a good deal of extra cash and enjoy working on cars.
thank u.i just look for something else
Good idea. You can probably find better alternatives out there. Good luck.
u r going to have problems down the road i owned 1 and it gave me air ride problems 1 day it would ride real low to the ground and the next i would be driving it and i would look like a PIMP with hydraulics thats how bad it got… you can find better deals out there go with an old ford or if you want a reliable car thats comfortable and not an eyesore go with a lumina i have a 1996 and the only thing i had to do with it is charge the air conditioning its a great car and it gets up and goes…

There’s no need to post the same question multiple times. It’s a little annoying.
The Lincoln air ride suspension issue is what got me into this discussion. My '89 Lincoln has that problem (or worse). I heard someone call into the show a couple months ago with that problem, and I was hoping to find out here what people had said on how to solve it.
Here’s the deal: When you are buying cars for under $1,000, they are throw-away cars. You drive them until something goes wrong, and then you walk away. Any money you spend on repairs is wasted, because these cars are already worn out and worthless. As long as you keep that in mind, you can have some really cheap transportation, but as soon as you start spending money trying to “fix” one of these junkers, you go DEEP into a hole, from which you will never escape.
I wouldn’t take a Fiero unless it was FREE, and even then I don’t think I’d want it. You can stuff a small block V8 into one (REALLY!), and have a hell of a lot of fun, but it’s all just a waste of money.
A Town Car will drink gas as if it were free, which it is NOT. And a Town Car with a bad transmission is nothing but a money pit. Walk away.
If you can find a used Corolla or Prizm with about 150-175K miles for around $1,500 you might have a decent car that will last for more than a few months. Good luck!
