1989 Chevy Silverado C1500

The service engine light comes on after a while and stays on. And at 55 mph the truck starts jerking. I took it to a mechanic and he told me that it was the E.G.R Valve and told me the light wouldn’t come on and the jerking would stop. It hasn’t. He also said I needed a Catalytic Converter. I haven’t replaced it yet fearing it’s not the problem. The service engine light still comes on and it is still jerking. What is wrong with this truck?

Do you have the DTC codes? They are in a format, like P0300. There are several different codes that cover both the EGR and catalytic converter, each with a different cause. Having the exact code can help us help you. Without it, we are shooting blind.

Many auto parts stores will read the code for free and give them to you. Stores like Autozone, Checkers, O’Reilly’s.
