1987 honda civic brake lights

The brake light on the dash is always on, as if the hand brake were engaged. And now the brake lights themselves are always on when the battery is hooked up. I have to take off the battery cables to prevent the battery from running down. It is a second car, but what is going on? How can I fix it?

Adjust or replace (as appropriate) the brake light switch under the dashboard. The switch contacts the brake pedal arm and operates the brake lights. That should correct the brake light problem.

There is a similar switch under the parking brake lever, which, if malfunctioning, could make the dashboard light stay on. The dash light may also indicate low brake fluid level in the reservoir.

Thanks MCparadise. This was driving me loco! I see in my Haynes how to do it. You’re a lifesaver!
