81 vanagon (air cooled) over heating
needs muffler…does this have any affect on overheating?
The muffler should not make it overheat. But why not have it fixed before you asphyxiate yourself. I would guess the engine is not getting the airflow it needs. Good luck on finding an air cooled mechanic.

Every mechanic is air cooled unless he is swimming or in the shower.
One thing to check is whether or not the fan is running and the is no blockage of the airflow to the engine. If airflow is good, I wonder if there is a lubrication problem.
