I have a 2003 PT Cruiser. The water pump failed so I’m replacing it and the timing belt. The pump is replaced and I’ve started reassembly but I can’t get the timing belt over the tensioner. No matter what I do, I can’t get enough slack in the tensioner so that I can get the timing belt in place.

It appears you need a 6mm Allen wrench to open a retaining plate to re-adjust the tensioner.
Ooooh, great posting, Bustedknuckles.
some of the older PT’S require replacing the tensioner with an updated version
Sounds like maybe you have an improper part. Count the teeth on the old belt compared to the new belt.
