'03 Jeep Transmission problem

'03 with 75,000 miles. Took it dealer, said the problem is the Transmission Solenoid. They want to replace Trans Valve Body for $1175. I have found solenoids for $200/plus labor. Do I have to go that route or can the solenoid just be replaced? Seems like more is being done than needed.

It all depends on the symptoms you are experiencing. Is the transmission not making a gear transition? Is the transmission starting in the wrong gear? Are there any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) set? Any signs of excess debris in the pan and possibly in the valve body?

The dealer has the advantage of diagnosing the vehicle in hand. You are looking for a second opinion without another diagnosis. They may have discovered something that is very germain to what they want to replace.
