01 Ram3500 Cummins diesel 3 times ran out of fuel

Hi, the 1st time was me myself, then my bro. inlaw 2 times after. As we were traveling all the 3 times, no tools so we didn’t bleed the injectors. Think i hurted the injection pump?

It’ll run rough at first but will smooth out. What I do on my Ram when I change the fuel filters fuel/water separator (I have never run it out of fuel) is fill the new filter with fresh diesel, install, hold the accelerator 1/2 way down then start engine. Keep accelerator 1/2 way down until engine smooths out then slowly release. You probably didnt hurt a thing but you really need to start looking at your fuel guage more often.

Thanks TRANSMAN, if you need foreign cars and JAP motorcycle tips let me know, i wanna return the favor. it was last year when my truck ran out of fuel, i bough the truck used, read forum, i got scared so i bough a cummins block mount lift pump for now, and will replace soon with a low fuel light kit. It scared me to read, because i do pull cars and heavy loads with it. Recently i have noticed my fuel consuption drop from 18-19 MPG down to 16-15, or just my immagination, i was thinking fuel quality lately by they mixing with Ethenol? But i’ll change that lift pump tomorrow, as i don’t really trust the new design in tank one yet. How Can i test my injector pump? it fires up very very quickly in the very very cold mornings too, without heater. Thanks

“Recently i have noticed my fuel consuption drop from 18-19 MPG down to 16-15, or just my imagination, i was thinking fuel quality lately by they mixing with Ethanol?”

Well, it’s not Ethanol but you may have winter blend diesel which has a lower heating value and will reduce your fuel mileage.

Thanks guys, i feel better now. I was worried on that injector pump.

ethanol is is gasoline, not diesel.

the drop in mileage is from other causes. the difference between a “winter blend” is negligible.

the fuel injector either works or it doesn’t. stop running out of fuel!!!

I will replace the liftpump ASAP, keeping my finger cross. :~)
