I thought it sounded funny. That link clears it up a bit and the OP is right; one always tries to pull, never push, a wrench.
If pushing is a necessity, the palm of the outstretched hand should be used rather than wrapping the wrench up with the fingers.
Other than that, avoid flaking chrome and aim carefully when throwing one.

Definitely pull only. UNLESS, there’s no choice but use extreme caution.
