Which car for snow?

In general, car rentals won’t rent to drivers under 25, male or female, but especially male.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions on this point.

Good point . . . and exactly why I wouldn’t allow my 19 year old male to make such a road trip. Rocketman

I’d get some chains for the Sable and let him take that. Explain that the chains are a last resort to be used to get to a safe stopping place and not to be used as a means to keep going in awful conditions. My reasoning for him taking the Sable? Which car would you rather see with a new dent in it when he gets home? Also, the sedan is less likely to roll over in an accident. FWD is sufficient for any reasonable snow driving if one does not drive like an idiot. I know that’s tough for a 19 year old, but if he’s going to drive like an idiot the AWD won’t save him either.

I would second this. At the end, Pilot as an SUV is meant for off-road conditions, when Sable is not. Pilot will be much easier to get moving in snow for sure. The major thing your son should realize though, is that AWD does not make vehicle to stop any better…

either at this point ,just the thought of a 19yr. old driving through snow covered mountain passes. forgo the tires make sure he has lots of road flares and packets of toasty toes, maybe some packets of katschup in case he gets hungry after he slides of the road!!! ru #$%*$# crazy

LOL, if he’s 19 it’s probably been several years since his parents “sent” him anyplace. I still get to buy my 12 year old airline tickets and “send” her places, but that won’t last much longer. MO to CO is only a one day drive (600-800 highway miles), it’s not a big deal. Just take whichever car is more comfortable and have fun.

I also do not believe that a 19 year old can rent a car from the major car rental places. However, there are plenty of “limos” (vans/busses) from the denver airport to the major ski towns, so you don’t really need a car at all.

LOL, he’s 19, not 8. Last time I looked, the U.S. government was sending 19 year olds into war zones. Maybe we should all try to remember what we were doing when we were 19 (I know I’m getting old, but driving two states away on interstate highways in the winter wouldn’t make my top 100 list for “risky” behavior). It’s really not a big deal, this trip is all interstate highway. He needs some cash, a cell phone, and a decent car. Tell him to take it easy on the beer when he’s driving and don’t worry.
