What year Subarus had head gasket problems

Ask your shop what tests they did that make them believe both head gaskets have failed. Typically this is done by testing for exhaust gasses in the coolant, cooling system pressure tests, and/or cylinder pressure tests. How much oil are you needing to add? One quart per 500 miles? One quart per 1500 miles?

we do not know mileage on the car

2013 was in the years where EJ engine was supposedly cured of headgasket problems (2008+), just before pulling it off production

to defend Subaru, even on healthy engine and more robust make, if one gets engine overheated, headgaskets can be breached

@Shannon_Christian, you gave too little information to make any reasonable comments

The damaged was probably done by the previous owner and now you are the one paying for it . Your choice is to have it fixed then drive it or trade it .

Subaru has not resolved their head gasket issues to date. The sooner you come to grips with that reality the better. The head gasket generally lasts between 100 to 150 000 km. If you can accept that fact and budget for it in advance it will be less stressful.

I have an 04 forester with 360 000 km which is my work vehicle and my wife has a 2016 forester with 126 000 km. The head gasket on the 2016 requires replacement. Bubbles in the radiator, loss of coolant blah blah blah.

If you like outdoors and understand the capabilities of the vehicle itā€™s a hard to beat vehicle for what it offers and what it can do. Power to weight ratio, strong suspension etc puts it ahead of many other vehicles.

As long as Subaru stays with the boxer engine design, you are going to have head gasket issues. Thatā€™s an inherent weakness of design. If you can afford to change the head gaskets and you have a specialist Subaru mechanic who knows the routine with repairing the vehicle and is thorough is his workmanship give him the repair job and when the repair is completed , shake his hand and book your next head gasket replacement in another 100 to 150 000 km time.
