I’m having a weird electrical problem with both (R&L) trunk tail lights. As I turn on my headlight my truck tail lights should automatically turn on but they don’t. I just noticed that when I open my trunk half way up my tail lights turn on but as soon as I close my trunk, the tail light turn off. Any ideas on what could be causing this?
I think you answered the question . Trunk up lets a wire or wires make contact, down they don’t . Look for a damaged wire.

I had a similar problem on my Corolla one time, where neither license plate light was lighting up, which they should when the headlights are on. The problem turned out to be an electrical connector in the wire from the body to the trunk lid had broken, at the point where it flexed each time the trunk lid was opened and closed. I just removed the connector and soldered the two ends of the wires together, solved pronto.
