US city

I disagree with DC as an answer; once you eliminate the part of DC that does not have Virginia as a western border there is little that solves the all state X answer. I like Carter Lake,IA as an answer. Another river border that places a town on a polyp of a state is Ridgeley,WV.

I’m surprised none of you mentioned Greenwich, CT, which is directly adjacent to Stamford on the southwest.

Oh, that’s right, Greenwich is officially a town. So it doesn’t fulfill the requirements as specified - if you’re nitpicking…

No. No. No. It does not say you start from your house. It doesn’t imply that you are starting in a state. Where this Puzzler fails is that it doesn’t say “anywhere in the city.” Your last sentence is wrong. Note their use of the word “eventually.”

"Imagine you’re at home in a city somewhere in the United States. You decide to travel along each of the four compass directions, north, south, east, and west. Day 1, you travel due north and you eventually cross a state line. Let’s call this state X. You return home.

The next day you decide to travel due south. Again you come to the border of your home state and its neighbor. It is also state X. You return home amazed.

Day 3, you elect to proceed due east and you are shocked to find out that the first state you reach is, again, state X! On the fourth day you travel due west and soon are stupefied to find a sign saying, “Welcome to State X”!
There is only one city in the United States whereby traveling along the four compass points, north, south, east and west, the first state you reach is identical no matter which direction you choose. Name the city and the state."

Well it doesn’t fit the Puzzler exactly since nobody really has a home there, but if you are on Ellis or Liberty Island in the state (and city [and county]) of New York, you can travel in all four compass directions (in fact, in any direction, 360 degrees) and you will cross the boundary with New Jersey.

Ellis Island is particularly relevant since you would cross that boundary on land in most directions, as only the “original” portion of Ellis Island is New York territory.

I was going to post something critical and witty, and yes, I will point out that Ellis Island is not a city, but isn’t it administered by the US Park Service? If so, there’s probably someone who lives there.

This is not directed at you, but since when did “solutions to the Puzzler” become “things that aren’t solutions to the Puzzler”?

If Italy had states, Vatican City could be an answer. Although, since Vatican City is technically a state, it IS an answer. That’s how our game is played. Oh wait, not in the lower 48, therefore totally wrong. THAT’s how our game is played.
