Transverse oriented engines

I recall that the Morris and VW attached the pressure plate to the crankshaft with the flywheel to the outward facing pressure plate. There were some unusual procedures to remove the VW transmission while the Morris clutch was attached like the VW but could be replaced without removing the transmission.

There were many peculiarities in FWDs of that time as I recall.

Just ran across this. The first car with the now-standard transverse engine + separate transmission on one end + unequal-length half shaft was the '64 Autobianchi (partially owned by Fiat) Primula:
