Transmission Solenoid

I love my Saab Areo wagon, but lately it refuses to go into first gear. It drives quite well in 2nd gear, except for the sluggish start up. A local machanic said the problem was a faulty solenoid sensor. Does that meam I need a whole new transmission? Am I doing more harm to it by driving it in 2nd? How long before 2nd gear goes, too?

I’m not an expert on Saab’s but the solenoid he is talking about is probably a shift modulator. You should not drive in second gear because it’s causing damage. Have the modulator replaced because you do not need another transmission. You may though if you keep driving in second gear.
