I took to Orioles and had checked for codes. Onky thing they came up with was a o2 sensor.
I don’t think their testers are good enough to test for Tran codes.
Would the torque converter in any way cause a hard shifting?

Still unsure of what you are describing…
Go to Advance auto or O’Reilly auto parts and have them scan the codes, they normally use a better scanner that will read the TCM codes…
Yes the 4T65E trans has some valve body issues as well as the Accumulator Pistons 1-2, 2-3 and 4th are bad about wearing, the accumulator springs get weak, etc etc… There is also some internal things that need to be addressed when rebuilding one of these… Some of the common complaints are long shifts or hard shifts and chatter on acceleration… Common codes are P1811, P0741, P0894…
May be time for a pro trans builder to have a look at it…
I have no idea what that means - as in, IDK who “Orioles” are.
Under the conditions that you described it will cause things to be “herky-jerky” for lack of a better description. You’ll be cruising along - say about 45 or higher, and it will need some throttle and will start feeling like it’s jerking along - like hiccups. But that’s no “hard shifting.”
Honestly, I don’t think you’re able to give good descriptions of what you mean by “hard shifting” so I don’t think that you have “hard shifting.” When you start out from a stop, what does it do?
If it’s only when pulling a hill, then you don’t have “hard shifting” - you have TCC shudder.
Stop giving things like “slipping” or “hard shifting” and start giving detailed and literal descriptions of what you feel/hear/see and under what exact conditions. “Slipping” and “hard shifting” are closer to diagnoses/interpretations. Give literal descriptions. Do you even know what your shift points are?
C’mon, the Baltimore Orioles. Maybe Gunnar Henderson looked at it.
@knocksensor You seem to worry about these old vehicles you have and may not have the knowledge to explain the problems. If it was me I would either have a shop put them back in good working order or dump them and move up to a newer or even new vehicle.
Orioles = O’Reilly’s ?
That could be!
I prefer NOOPA for auto parts.
O’Reilly Cheap testers.
By hard shifting I mean actually clunking when it shifts. The first time it clunked louder on the lower gears. Second time clunked harder on higher gears.
By jerking I mean when going up a bigger hill it used to start jerking the car so would feel like it’s shaking. Only up a hill.
Right. You probably have a P1811 code in there. And your converter clutch is probably having lock up problems. The two things you describe are actually different, but typical of a 4T65E.
You may have some inner cv axle joints about to fail… Have you checked your engine/trans mounts??
(you may have already said, don’t remember)
Moving from a dead stop it works marvelous as long as you drive normal. If you floor it at time will feel like something is slipping. What’s slipping I don’t know. This started doing that 10,000 miles ago or more.
Have not checked motor mounts.
Tire(s) spinning?..
If I was doing burn outs or cheerios I would not be concerned or writing about it. Tires are not spinning. Of course when this happened in the past I’ve always let let off on the gas as fast as possible.
Stop saying “slipping.” As far as I can tell from your descriptions, your transmission is not “slipping” - slipping is so smoooooth that it generally doesn’t go with “jerking” or “shaking.”
Slipping is when you hit the gas, and the engine revs up, but the power isn’t felt going to the wheels. It’s like revving up the engine but the gear shifter is in neutral.
Anyway, like I said. You are describing torque converter clutch shudder and hard shifting. The causes can be diverse, but you still haven’t had it scanned for codes with anything but a generic code reader (like at O’Reilleys)
At least at O’Reilly, you’ll find someone behind the counter to ring up your purchase
At Auto Zone, you’ll be waiting a long time, because all the employees are outside, working on customer’s cars
We dont have o’reilly’s here in new jersey.
That’s true, but I have seen some Orioles from time to time.
L always thought they were only found in Baltimore
o’reilly’s Are all over this state and then some
I drove it today some 80 miles. No hard/clunking shifting at all.
Dropped trans pan drained oil. Tranny pan was very clean besides some very fine mud like crap and very little of thdt.
Drain pan had a half dozen metal chunks. 1 was a bit bigger. Like half size of pinky finger nail and thicker. Others just tiny chunks.
I ordered a filter and have to get fluid. Probably next week get it done. Putting some Lucas fix in. Another option is Lucas conditioner.
In mu opinion the oil smelt like normal after tens of thousands of miles. Almost 230,000 miles. Got it maybe at 130,000.
Any chance you took pictures??
The bigger one sounds like a broke clutch pack snap ring…
Chunks of metal are never a good thing… lol
