Toyota tranny Flush and toy fluid vs additives for 96 V6 camry

Hi, trying to budget here…Should I pay 180 for a Toy dealer tranny flush w/o pan drop but with toy tran fluid? Or go Pep Boys w/o pan drop fluid w/additives for 99 bucks? Should I insist on pan drop and filter cleaning?

Thanks for your help!

Neither, go to local transmission shop, get pan drop with filter and refill with fresh fluid. Less than Toyota dealer, much better than Pep Boys.

Flush without pan drop is asking for trouble - don’t go there.

How about something in between.

Try a local tranny specialist or a good independent who does tranny work also. Cheaper then the dealer…and far more knowledgeable then the kids working at PepBoys.

I would go with a pan drop, inspection of debris on the bottom and magnet, new filter, and pan refill. If there is a lot of friction element debris in the pan and there is operational problems, a subsequent flush might be indicated.

Hope this helps in your decision.

Did either one of these places offer an explanation as to why they want to perform a trans flush without dropping the pan?? If I were to ask them this the ONLY answer I would accept from them was that their technician was born with x-ray eyes and he can see through the pan and he says that the pan and filter are both spotless. Otherwise, I would go to a trans shop, Not a big chain shop, and tell them to drop the pan, change the filter and refill using ONLY Toyota fluid.

Aha! I finally found an error in one of Transman’s posts! X-rays won’t penetrate a metal transmission and pan!!

But he’s the man to heed as far as the rest of the post goes.

Sorry, but transman didn’t say X-ray, he said x-ray, which is open to interpretation. It doesn’t mean X-rays are directly responsible, it just means a person’s vision would be similar to X-rays, in that he or she could see through things. Think of Superman. I think he (transman) is correct in this usage, and I’m sure he’s correct in his advice.

I don’t think any of us will find any errors in transman’s posts.

Good try, though.

I guess thats why I never became a Doctor…LOL

Yep, there is no reason to pay the dealership or Pep Boys for a transmission flush that isn’t recommended in your owner’s manual. Do the right thing and have the fluid drained and refilled with a proper pan drop and filter cleaning.

On anything transmission, transman is the authority.

I forgot to mention in my original post to have the final drive drained and refilled as that fluid is not shared with the main transmission.

So what did you finally have done?
