Toyota Corolla Doughnut Spare Replacement - Does Profile Matter?

The spare tire for my 2006 Corolla XRS has developed a bulge in the sidewall. The tire size is T125/70R16 96M.

I would like to replace the tire, but the least expensive replacement I found online is $130. However, I found a T125/80R16 96M for $86.

Can I save a few bucks and safely go with the ‘80’ profile?

The car’s regular tires are 195/55R16 87V. If I’m doing the math correctly, then the diameter of the ‘80’ profile tire more closely matches the diameter of the regular tires which I would think would be a good thing.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for the help!

Should be okay as a spare.

Remember, these doughnut spare tires are only suppose to be used for 50 miles @ no more than 50 MPH.

Make sure it fits your spare tire well.

Thanks. I figured it would be ok, but thought it best to ask.

Good idea! I’ll make sure there is some extra wiggle room in there the the larger tire

Just measure the diameter of the spare tire well. The diameter of your proposed spare on the rim is a little less than 24”.

I purchased the T125/80R16 and had it mounted. Fits in the wheel well just fine. Thanks for the help!
