Yup! Just one more example of why “The Good Old Days” weren’t that good.
The “good old days” were actually fairly awful.
Quite the contrary. Yes drum brakes are self energizing but also have springs to release them, so they actually release faster than̈ a disc brake ever can. In fact disc brakes never truly release, there is always some parasitic loss with disc brakes!
Much time is spent designing systems that will pull the pads away from the disc to minimize energy loss due to pad drag on the rotor. In a drum brake system, springs pull the shoes away from the drum so that, at normal operating temperatures, there is little or no brake drag.
Drum brakes provide superior initial braking force compared to disc, due to higher friction material surface area.
They are subpar in regards to heat dissipation.
They are cheap, with no expensive castings Simple stamped steel shoes, drums stamped and friction welded to their hubs. The only casting, the wheel cylinder, can be made in two simple machining operations.
We all know how much pollution foundries cause so its apparant that drum brakes are also better for the environment! Plus they tend to contain the brake dust so it can properly be disposed of during service.
You need 4 piston calipers to even attempt to match the initial bite that drum brakes have!
They are still used becuase they are self energizing! That means the force used to stop the vehicle is also helping to apply the shoes harder. They need to be pulled away from the drum with heavy springs becuase they would stay applied unlike disc brakes. Drums actually “stop” better than disc, They get a lot of hate but they are not really “bad” brakes!
Remember also that drums will flex very easily, prof? grab a brake drum for a Chevy 1/2 ton truck for an example, and put a drum mic in it, you can squeeze the drum and watch the needle move… So part of the stopping force is lost from the drum flexing where as a rotor does not give when pressure is applied to it in a clamping force…
I don’t mind doing rear brake shoe replacement, always kind of enjoyed as long as not one that has no room… lol
I remember being able to replace the rear shoes and hardware on the old Cavaliers just as fast as someone could do pads and rotors on the front of the same car… That included clean and lube as needed…
Yes drums work great the 1st time or 2 using them (exaggerated), but how often do we only use our brakes once every 30 minutes or so… lol
Also remember that a properly adjusted drum has just a touch of interference, that is why you adjust them up until you have a little drag (interference), of course they can get out of adjustment pretty quickly…
Another thing, the reason you can use 4 piston front calipers with rear drums, is because 75-80% of the stopping force comes from the front anyway, so no need for as much clamping force…
Each of these statements is wrong. The caliper piston uses a square seal in a trapezoidal groove. That IS the spring the retracts the piston to keep the pads away from the rotors. You can drive down the highway and read ambient temps at the face of the brake pad. That proves zero drag from the disk brakes. I have seen this data on test cars.
And I thought bearing runout pushed the pistons in and moved the caliper outward Mustangman
Oh, it does that!
100% That, plus the durometer of the seal material is all designed to act as a spring when the seal rocks in the groove, it is under tension and will retract the piston when the hydraulic pressure forcing it outward is removed. I posted this here a few times in the distant past only to get the side eye…
Later on, runout of the rotor will slap it back in too
I stopped using the forum because the ads combined with the layout of the screen the forum is almost unusable on my phone.
I no longer have a computer because it got destroyed in a fit of rage because a printer was not connecting. Unfortunately i should have destroyed the printer instead since i believe that to be the actual culprit.
Rick . . . !
Sorry to hear about that incident
I agree IT can be pretty darn frustrating at times🤬
Good to know. I wonder what would happen if you were having a tough time fixing someone’s car.
After reading your post about killer FWD vehicles and now this one, it seems you need professional help, anger management, someone to talk to that can maybe either change up your meds or give you some meds to help you control your anger/temper before it turns violent and someone gets hurt, or you say something to the wrong person and they hurt you…
I never said " killer FWD vehicles" i just simply stayed a matter of fact the handling is subpar, borderline dangerous amd thats why they have tp add negative camber in the back, so they dont wipe out on turns.
I am actually a very calm individual! My over 50 years of level headed, stable demeanor proves that! I did break the computer, but it was at the end of its service life since it was from 2012 and ran peak capitalisms Microsoft windows on it. Designed to become obsolete aince i couldn’t run newer version of windows on it due to memory constraints.
I think maybe a reading comprehension program could possibly help you.
I’ve owned and driven plenty of fwd vehicles
Curious I’ve never had that subar and borderline dangerous camber and handling
If i met Rick in person and he tried some of his venting or other antics he’d walk away with a 1/2" breaker bar sticking out of his ear.
There is no need for violence or threats. I love everyone believe it or not. I can still love and even get along with someone that I disagree with on many issues.
Believe it or not during election day there was someone that needed a jumpstart at the polling place and they made it very obvious by the stickers on their vehicle that they had opposite political beliefs than I do. I still helped them and we shook hands and parted ways at the end wishing each other well.
After talking with the man a bit I truly believe he would have helped me if it was me who needed a jump ( he had no jumper cables, but i believe he would have used his vehicle.)
Its called being a mature adult.
Download DuckDuckGo and give it a try. I use it on my iPad and it works great. Only blank spots where ads used to be.

You might want to go back and re-read your own post again..
Implying that something is inherently dangerous and even deadly understeer is not much different then saying killer, there is more ways to say something then just flat out saying it..
You only cleaned it up to borderline dangerous after I said something about it…
For a very calm person, you have some hidden rage.. It would have been different if you had said, well the laptop ticked me off and I went and bought a new one and took a hammer or whatever to my old one that was acting up, but you made it sound as if you couldn’t get a printer to link up and threw a temper tantrum like a small child would do because they didn’t get their way… One is throwing a fit of rage and the other is blowing off steam…
