Thermometer

If the thermometer does not work, why don’t the vehicle run hot? Also the engine runs louder when the guage is not working.

We need a lot more information. What year, model, mileage for this car?

What thermometer? You could have several thermometers but likely only one thermostat. Has it been tested? Do you feel you could safely remove, test and replace it? If not, I see a trip to the garage to get the answers to a few questions.

A bad thermostat doesn’t necessarily mean the engine will run hot. If the thermostat is stuck open the engine will actually run below normal temperature. Too cold. This is not good, and causes reduced fuel mileage.

There is no direct connection between the thermostat in the engine and the temperature gauge on the dashboard. The temperature gauge is operated by a coolant temperature sensor.
