I take some issue with “independent” however. Independent of whom? Or what? The Big 3 were all public companies like AMC. It could be argued that AMC was the dependent car company seeing as how they used Chrysler transmissions, GM/Delco ignitions systems and a host of other products developed by other carmakers.
