The good ole days

I have a 1928 series $2 bill and a few from the 1970’s (not shown).

As a young child I remember my mother telling me the opposite - bad luck.

Can anyone verify either way?

With all this talk about tipping I think this needs to be said; since some tip givers have something to say when offering a tip… Like “buy yourself a nice lunch,” or “You probably need this for rent,” or Buy your kids something nice…" and other insulting and demeaning remarks…

You should never tell someone what to do with the tip you gave them because it undermines their autonomy, it can be condescending (implying they need financial guidance), it disrespects the nature of a gift, and it ignores their personal circumstances.

It turns a gesture of appreciation into a controlling, awkward interaction that diminishes the recipient’s dignity and value. Tipping is about recognizing service, not dictating personal spending habits, and interfering makes the giver seem superior and the receiver like a child needing instructions.

If I am handing the recipient the tip, I simply say, “Thank you.” Which I did last week when I handed my Postal Carrier and Trash Collector a Christmas Card with a tip inside…

My best friend is a Critical Care Nurse. He occasionally gets a gratuity from relatives of his patients, and he puts that money in the Poor Box at church.

The DMV charges for use of a CC, so that was where I wrote a check. They now accept debit cards without additional charge. My dog groomer takes only cash or checks., I use cash.
ATM: For a while if I wanted more than $100. the ATM at my bank dispensed a hundred dollar bill. So, to get twenties and I wanted more than $100 had to do several withdrawals. They installed new ATMs that only dispense $20. There are only a few cases where I use cash, as noted my dog groomer. The Ford dealership that I have been a customer of was sold last year. The new owners now charge 3% for CC use, debit cards are no charge. Ford does issue a Visa card with various choices of Fords on them, I had a ‘Bronco’ card, yep, 3% if I used that card.
The only time I changed banks in my twenty year military service was SEA, Bank of America had an exclusive deal for banking services. Other than that I used the same bank for checking, cars were financed through the base credit union.
I too am leery of automatic payments, but got a substantial reduction in my cellphone bill. That’s the only autopay I have.
Restaurant/bars, if no upcharge will pay with CC, but always tip with cash. More and more restaurants do charge for CC use which I understand, most restaurants operate on thinner profit margins. The chain fast food restaurants that I occasionally use have not yet started the upcharge. I will order online, then drive there to pick up the order.

I don’t have a CC either…

Oh yeah, my only income is my SSA and the wife’s SSA (which is 1/2 of mine due to not being able to work since 2015 from having her heart laid on her chest) from both being disabled… Yeah, I love going without the things most Americans have and being “Privileged”… With todays use of eChecks being used mostly, it is the same as using a DC anyway and you are unable to floats checks like you could 20-30+ years ago…

I do have one (kinda) CC but it is a CFNA card that can ONLY be used at my old work, I use it for tires and anything I don’t do at home (6 months deferred interest over $150)… Need a battery, I put it on the card so I can spread it out over 6 months… I buy carry out and install at home, can’t afford to pay a shop to do it…
Yes being “Privileged” is awesome… :man_facepalming:

You’re missing out my friend. I try to treat people with bad energy with good energy. At least half the time they brighten up making for a pleasant interaction. In other words I’m getting more out of people than you are and I get what I wanted.

Exactly. ODR follows his own ‘golden’ rule: do unto others as they do unto you. I prefer the original.

That is also my approach. At the very least, interacting with them on a humane level will tend to disarm/surprise them, but it frequently works to improve their c-r-a-p-p-y attitude.

I try to always be nice when out and about, but I also leave people alone in hopes they do the same… I hate small talk, like people asking how ya doing? I just say good thanks, what am I going to do complain about stuff or ask them how they doing and heaven forbid they start to tell me??
Most of what I say to people when they say Awww, I love your dog(s), is thank you and smile…

Even when I delt with customers, I could talk to them about their vehicle needs and give them updates and stuff, but sucked at small talk…

In management classes in the Military we were taught that technique.

People love to talk about themselves so you just find something and ask them about it. Car, clothes, book, novelties etc. get the wrong guy and they’ll never shut up.

Yeah, try my neighbor. She does tend to talk, no pause button. Her husband doesn’t need the money but works at a big box store, I think to get away from her.

Over the years, I’ve known SEVERAL guys who would keep working well into their 70s . . . in some cases they had serious heart issues . . . because they were genuinely terrified :fearful:of their wives and wanted to spend as little time as possible in the house

I’m thinking they stayed married for financial reasons? :money_with_wings:

I’m wondering if someone will flag this:face_with_spiral_eyes::face_with_crossed_out_eyes::woozy_face:

I can top that, unfortunately. One of our School Psychologists worked well into his 70s because life at home–with both his wife and his mother-in-law–was just so unpleasant. And–also unfortunately–he was the only one of our School Psychologists who was essentially worthless at his job.

So, he persisted in holding a job at which he was mostly worthless, thus making things more difficult for both students and staff.

When my father in law died, the MIL occasionally said that she wanted to move in with us. Mrs JT shot that down immediately. I didn’t even have to threaten to move out!
