2012 outback. If the rear main oil seal is leaking will oil be visible on the flywheel?
Maybe.
But usually there would be oil stains under the car from the oil leaking out from between the engine and transmission.

The flywheel has 2 sides to it, which side are you referring to??
Depending on how fast or slow it is leaking the engine side might /will probably have signs of oil on it, but the clutch side would have to be leaking pretty bad to make it around to that side of it depending on turbulence at speed in the bell housing…
I’m looking at the flywheel from underneath the car. I was told that the rear main seal was leaking but I can’t see any oil residue on either side of the flywheel. I used a camera to view the engine side. I do have an oil pan leak which the shop can’t seem to fix, two attempts so far.
Thanks for your reply.
Using the camera, do you see any signs oil oil leaking down the back end of the engine considering that is where the rear main seal is?? forget about the flywheel, look at the back of the engine, the oil will run down the closest path…
Ever thought it might not be the oil pan, or rear main leaking??
You can start the video about the 6:30 mark…
I don’t see any oil at the rear of the engine. I know about the separator plate.
The car went in for an upper oil pan leak which was fixed. The service advisor mentioned that the rear main seal was leaking. I have been unable to find any oil at the rear of the engine. The oil pan is leaking. The shop has tried twice to seal the pan where it connects to the upper pan. It’s going back in for a third time. The advisor invited me to look underneath with the mechanic. The oil pan should be easy to seal. The upper pan was the difficult part, not something to do in the driveway.
Thanks.
I’d replace the lower tin pan, could be warped or bent… also make sure they clean the pan rail with brake cleaner etc and use new clean gloves or very clean hands after the pan rail is cleaned and while adding sealant to the pan and installing said pan, oil from the hands/fingers or gloves can cause the sealant not to seal properly causing a leak…
