Updates on car.
The heads are off and actually not terrible shape. They were hanging low though and out of adjustment. The mechanic stated the terrible turbo engine design Subaru used the only way of checking or adjusting the valves is motor removal since camshaft needs to be removed and parts fall out during adjustment while attached to motor.
On bottom end he said could not for sure tell if rings were 100% so is replacing them. The pistons are fine. The turbo looks great for 170k. Looking forward to our beloved car back.
There is a special place in heaven waiting for posters who give updates.

I’m not sure if that is technically a problem
But when a car manufacturer insists on installing horizontally opposed engines, it’s not easy . . . and perhaps impossible . . . to do certain services and repairs with the engine installed
By the way, I’m not sure why the cam needs to be removed if you’re only CHECKING the valve lash
