Funny how that middle seat always seemed like the best spot when we were kids, even if it was tiny and uncomfortable. Looking back, it was just another good excuse for everyone to pile in and make the trip feel like an adventure.
I believe those were/are called Airport Limo’s, just a stretch with bench seats per door only/mainly used to transport people to and from the airport…
Yes, Airport Limousine is the correct term, but since there are people on this site that are under 70, I chose a picture![]()
Last time I was picked up at the Airport it was a stretched 10 person Lincoln limo, absolutely nothing like the airport limos of the old days.
Back in the 60s and 70s you could get a whole gang of kids in the back of an Elcamino or pickup truck. Back then, nobody thought twice about doing that where I lived…
I am not gonna lie, being one that has never stepped foot in a commercial airport, I have never seen or heard of an airport limo, that is until Road Kill did an episode about one that David or Mike bought and David explained what it was…

I guess we a little slower to catch on down here in the south, cause we did it in the 80’s and 90’s some too… in y area anyway… ![]()
EDIT to say "in my (not y) area anyway…
Sure they rode in the back of pickups. You pups aren’t old enough to remember or have been there. ![]()
Took me a minute, pups=readers of the post under 70![]()
I have had riders in the back of my pickup in this decade, though just short drives on surface streets.
Bring back the Subaru Brat!
I grew up with that front bench middle spot, and you always knew you drew the short straw when the shifter and the radio knob kept bumping your knee. Still on long rides it felt weirdly cozy everyone up front talking and no one cared about personal space back then.
I remember a “rule of thumb” many people had, regarding the middle spot . . .
If there were 2 guys and a lady riding in the pickup, for example, the lady was ALWAYS the one riding in that middle spot . . . unless she was the truck’s owner/driver, of course
Guess I wouldent get that spot in that situation then. Lol.
Some rules of thumb depend on how big the “thumb” is… Back in the late '60s, several friends were taking off in Reggie’s car (an early '60’s Impala…) and Willie called “shotgun,” but Mike who is a lot bigger than Willie, shoved Willie over into the middle and he piled in the front seat after Willie…
As it happened, Reggie rear-ended a car at a stop light, not so serious that either car was disabled, but Willie, now sitting in the middle of the front seat, bounced off the rear view mirror… Now, almost 60-years later, Willie still sports an upside down “T” scar on his forehead… ![]()
