Recently had to do brakes on my '04 Sprinter at 40K miles. The dealer told me they always replace the rotors when they change pads. I took the bait but am feeling I was taken for a ride. I understand that rotors are sometime not resurfaceable but always, automatically replacing them? Was I a sap?
Probably not. The rotors may or may not have lasted another set of pads. If the rotors gave a problem in 20K and pads still had life you may have been more upset.
I always replace pads and rotors at the same time, but I don’t have the equipment to resurface the rotors. It’s so much less expensive to do the job myself that I don’t mind spending a little extra on the rotors. You might consider doing this job yourself next time if you can lift the wheels. It’s really easy, at least on my 3 cars.
